Monster Butterfly Kite

by Martin Karásek
(Chzech Republic)

First flight out in the field.

First flight out in the field.

The "Butterfly" kite pictured was produced in 2008. We managed to break it 3 times during testing! Here are some basic specs...

Height = 252 cm
Width = 246 cm
Weight = 4.5 kg

Length of the tail = 1100 cm
Weight of the tail = 1.1 kg
Length of flying line = 120 m

Skeleton is made of wooden sticks 25x25mm (the middle one) and 20x20mm (on sides) connected by a metal cross. The sail material is linen.

To get the kite up in wind is easy but landing this thing is a little more difficult!

Big and Impressive!
by: Tim Parish

Thanks for that pic - it's instantly recognizable as a butterfly, yet soooo different to your usual Chinese-style butterfly kites you might see in a park or down at the beach!
